Chewbacca

Chewbacco (Chewy)

Chewy when found and then later after he was healthy and groomed.

We rescued or adopted Chewbacca when our grandkids found him abandoned on Christmas eve, 2015. We put up signs and ran notices on local social media and Petfinder, but no one claimed him. We took him to the Veterinarian and found that he was older, estimated 9 – 10 years, and he had a hair wrapped around one of his canines, it was abscessed, and he lost the tooth. It had been a long time since anyone had groomed Chewy, and he had a Star Wars sweater on that had been on for we don’t know how long, and the fur on his back had worn off. Chewy wasn’t chipped, so his owner could not be tracked down. We don’t know what his heritage was, but he appears like a mini-schnauzer, so that’s what we called his breed.

He settled in and became friends with our Chihuahua and our two rescued Great Pyrenees. Later, he became pals with the cats and kittens and was an excellent guard dog (not), barking at the slightest movement or sound from outside. He liked our move to the mini-farm and enjoyed playing on the property. He found many sounds and even flying leaves to bark at.

Chewy developed seizures late in life that didn’t respond to medication, and this last summer passed away from his seizures. We miss him, and the house feels empty without him.

skating on thin ice

Here is Bonnie running across our little pond. The pond was frozen, but the outside temperature was in the high 40s and melting fast. She got soaked from the bank’s edges but didn’t fall in, thank goodness. She’s a dare-devil, and her brother, Clyde, was also on the pond, but only briefly.

Leash training

Bonnie and Clyde are beginning leash training.  We are beginning by just letting them wear them around the house and removing them when they go out in the fenced backyard. They feel inhibited when wearing them but do respond better to training sessions.

They are scheduled for a Vet appointment next week to get chipped and neutered. This is before we have more bernedoodles running around. Today their weight was 42 lbs for Clyde and 36 lbs for Bonnie.  They are 21 weeks old.

Today, they chased one of the feral cats.  That kitty had ventured into their backyard and was chomping down on their dog food while they were inside. They danced and whined because it wasn’t one of their kitties, and I let them out the back door, and the chase was on.  Cat one, dog zero, the feral kitty easily bounded over the fence and was gone.

playtime with levon, bonnie, and clyde

Levon, Bonnie, and Clyde are playing. Levon rolls on his back and teases the puppies, begging them to sniff or paw at him. His paws and claws are swift, and they sometimes get their noses booped and swatted. They love it, and he loves it.

Levon is our bounce-back kitty. He was adopted out with one of his sisters. He is slow to warm up to people, but once accepted, he is very affectionate. He was returned to us because he caught birds and chipmunks. The lady that adopted him didn’t like his hunting and killing.

He continues to roam our property and occasionally catches a bird or critter. However, his outstanding feature is his loving on the new puppies. He hangs out with them, rolls on his back, and challenges them to play. He sometimes swats them if they get too rough.

He is hard to tell apart from Phatty, his big brother, and they look almost the same in their face. He is, however, lighter brown and has more of a stripe pattern to the fur on his trunk.

He’s our baby that no one wanted.

Mia kitty

Mia is a boy and was named before we found out his gender. He was one of a litter of five from Moma Sophie. There were three boys and two girls. We adopted his mother, Sophie Moma when she was quite young and intended to have her spayed. However, we have a dog door, and she used it to go out and got pregnant before we could get her veterinarian appointment. We kept two of the kittens and adopted out the other three.

Sophie Moma was an indoor/outdoor cat and carried all the kittens, when they were tiny, out to the backyard to teach them to hunt. This led to a bounce-back of one of the kittens, Levon, who would catch birds and chipmunks. When Mia was a teenage kitten, he started limping, and we took him to the Vet and found out he had broken his back leg. He wore his first cast for almost two weeks before he managed to get it off. His second cast lasted less than a week, and we gave up after that. He was quite the dare-devil, and we suspect he fell from one of the trees while chasing birds.

We suppose there are siamese genes in his background because he has a siamese-like cry, different from his brothers or mother.

It’s bath day for the puppies

Yesterday was a muddy mess for the puppies. They enjoyed the warm weather, saw deer, and barked and greeted them. They also had a high old time running and getting muddy. I spent last evening cleaning up the house, and today is cleaning up the puppies.

phatty, what big fangs you have

This is Phatty, the biggest in the litter from Moma Sophie. He’s also the boss of the rest of the cats. He’s aloof around the other cats and is still getting accustomed to the new puppies.

What’s up on the counter?

These are Clyde’s paws when looking on the counter for cats. How big will he actually be? His sister’s paws are enormous. Mom was 75 pounds, and dad was 52 pounds. They currently weigh 36 pounds for Clyde and 30 pounds for Bonnie at four and a half months.
